Going on in Spite of

Today I find myself in a place of gratitude.  As I think about all that God has allowed me to do, and is currently allowing me to do I am filled with gladness.  This week has been very challenging for me and my wife.  Personally I have had to work, go to school, rehearse for the play “Beauty Shop” and take care of my aging mother.  There were times when we would be overwhelmed, but through the blood of Jesus we have been victorious.
I have had a couple of challenges in regards to being placed in the proper cohort at OCU.  Two of my books arrived late, and I am still waiting on one, but I am counting it all joy.  I know that God has a master plan for my life and that the work that he has begun in me shall come to pass in due season if I faint not.  I believe that God is telling me to keep going and to fight the good fight.  He has showed up in so many ways.  When my mother’s primary care physician’s office declined to assist us we took her to Piedmont Emergency Center.  We stayed there practically for a combined nine hours waiting for my mother to be tested, but God gave my wife and I the strength.  I had to leave there and go do the play and my wife stayed behind through it all. No matter what I am faced with I will continue to persevere with the Lord on my side.  Victory is mine sayeth the Lord.

Being Comfortable in an Uncomfortable Situation

    Sometimes you have to learn to be comfortable in an uncomfortable situation.  As we go through life I think most of us believe that because we have faith in God, or because we are saved that we aren't going to go through anything.  But I beg to differ.  I'm finding that to be so totally not the norm.  In fact it seems that the more you follow God and try to do right the harder it is.  The devil doesn't bother you as long as you're on his team and doing what he wants you to do.  As soon as you proclaim that you're going to carry your cross and hold up the blood stained banner here comes old slewfoot to try and throw a monkey wrench in your plans.  I'm so glad that the word tells us to be steadfast and unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as you know your work is not in vain (1Corinthians 15:58).  I also like to hear Paul's words to the Philippians where he says "I know what it is to be in need, I know what it is to have plenty.  I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want (Philippians 4:12).

    Most of us have it so good over here in America that we can't even begin to complain.  Our only problem is that we have so much that we take it for granted and begin to covet even more.  I heard Bishop Dale Bronner say that it is the wealthy man who has learned to live with less.  When you can be content in your situation it takes a lot of pressure off of you.  When you realize that you can only be in one room at a time in your house, or drive one car at a time it puts things in perspective for you.  I remember when I moved out to L.A. back in 1998 and lived in a one bedroom apartment for seven years.  I had a small small living room, kitchen, and a bathroom and was glad to have it.  I had just come out of a separation where I basically lost everything.  I remember driving three days to L.A. and getting there, and having to get an apartment, but my credit was jacked up and I was in a tough situation.  I remember talking to Mr. Tom Figus at Palms Caribbean Apartments on Overland Avenue and he was asking me for credit references and numbers to people that he could speak to on my behalf.  At the time I was busted and disgusted. I didn't know who he could speak to.  I was showing him my portfolio with pictures of me and Shaquille O'Neal, and Mike Epps, and D.L.Hughley, and all of my travels and the places where I performed.  That was all good, but he wanted to know who he could talk to.  I didn't know who he could talk to. So I called my mother because she always seemed to have good advice.  I told her that I had just driven three days to California, and that I was
thirty five years old and couldn't get an apartment.  My mother told me to pray to God and tell him what I needed.  So I did.  How many of you know that prayer works?  When I prayed I felt a release and sense of comfort that things would be alright.  Running through my mind up to this point were fears of where I would have to go, sleep, or live.  I knew that if you didn't have good credit you could end up at a homeless shelter, in a very bad neighborhood, or anywhere.  But the God that I serve saw different.

     I went back into the rental office and begin speaking to Mr. Figus again.  He told me that he had tried to contact my creditors and different people that I referred to him and the only person he could reach was my Mother. Thank God she gave me a good reference.  You know you're in trouble when your own mother won't give you a good credit reference.  At this point it wasn't even about credit references.  I just started writing down names of people who would vouch for me and say "yeah that Willie Brown is a good guy."  So I started writing down names of promoters, comedy agents, comedy clubs, and anyone who could say something good about me.  Finally Mr. Figus said to me "I really want to help you, but you've got to give me somebody that I can talk to, who can I talk to"?  And I was like "who can he talk to, who can he talk to"?  And it came to me.  I had an epiphany.  So I went out to my car and I took out my suitcase with Woody in it and went back into the rental office.  I reached down, opened up the suitcase and put Woody on my knee.  Mr. Figus began to chuckle.  I then made Woody say to him "you have a chance to make a difference in somebody's life today."  He continued to laugh and asked Woody "do you live in there" pointing to the suitcase.  And Woody said "I live in there, he lives in there and it's crowded Man"!  "We need somewhere to stay."  So Mr. Figus said "I've never seen anything like this in all of my years of property rental.  He said you seem like a pretty nice guy.  If you give me $500 today and $300 in a couple of days I'll prorate you for May, and wave a portion of your security deposit."  I gave him a money order for $500 and he gave me the
key to that apartment, and that was my first night in L.A..  Seven years later my credit was good and I moved from that one bedroom apartment in L.A. to a four bedroom house, with a two car garage on a half acre in McDonough, GA.  That's what God did for me.  And it didn't stop there.  He still keeps blessing me.

Sometimes God will let you go through a desert experience just to get your attention so that he can get something to you.  Sometimes he has to slow you down so that you can hear from him.  I find that the more I trust him and ask him to direct my path, the more he does it in mysterious ways.  We can't figure God out.  We think he's coming through the door and he comes up through the floor.  We think he's coming through the window, and he ends up coming through the chimney.  We just need to trust him.  Trust in the Lord at all times.  Lean not unto your own understanding.  Acknowledge him in all your ways and he will direct your path.  I don't know about you, but I want God to direct my path.  If you want God to direct your path do me a favor and leave a short comment at the bottom of this blog.  I'd love to hear from you and how God has helped you through on your journey.  May God continue to bless you and keep you always in Jesus name.

It's About That Time

     It's hard to believe that it was March when I made my last entry.  Boy does time fly.  I am making it through school pretty well thus far.  We are now at the half way mark in my Masters of Theology curriculum.  If we stay on point we should expect to graduate in April 2016.  We are moving through these cohorts with lightening speed.  I am learning so much, but with the accelerated speed at which we are going through the material I feel that I will need to go back and review for my own personal satisfaction. I am learning so much about Christian theology, the beginning of the church, the foundation of the canon, the major turning points in Christianity, the early church fathers, and the various movements like the Protestant Reformation, Methodism, and every thing that has shaped the church into what it is today.
     
     This weekend was action packed for me as well.  I flew to New Jersey on Thursday to do the Thomas Family Reunion.  They loved the show!  It was great.  They held the reunion at the Embassy Suites in Piscataway, N.J.  I was in rare form as the spirit was with me the whole time.  I brought Woody, and Uncle Rufus to life with comedy and music that filled the hearts of all in attendance.  I was actually doing the show for my cousin Beverly's husband, Willam's family. I stayed up that night after the show until 3 AM doing research for my paper on John Wesley's Doctrine of Sin.  I woke up at 5:30 AM to prepare to leave for the airport.  I had to catch a plane at 8 AM back to Atlanta.  When I arrived in Atlanta I hurried home to McDonough, repacked, paid some bills, and my wife and I drove six hours to Fort Walton Beach, FL to do another family reunion show. It looks like I'm becoming the King of the family reunions!  That's alright because I love it.  There is something special about performing for families.  There is something special about the people who see the importance of having such a gathering as a family reunion. A lot of work goes into planning a family reunion, and I take my hat off to the people who do so.  I'm also grateful that many families are seeking to have comedy and entertainment.  They see the benefit of it and do not mind paying a couple of thousand dollars plus hotel and lodging to make it happen.  I say "God bless you."  That's what the money is for.  If you can afford it do it.  Those memories will live long after the money is gone.

     My wife Sherry and I finally made it to Fort Walton Beach and it was an outside show.  Typically comedians do not like outside performances, but I was already paid in full to do this, and that's what I do.  It was like 100 degrees outside on Saturday, but I tried to get under the tent that they had as much as possible.  The only problem was that I was under the tent with the family performing and the speakers were like forty five feet behind me.  So every time I spoke you would hear my voice after I had already said the words.  It was doing a number on my timing.  I had to tell the jokes and then listen for them to be finished before I could go on to the next one.  And you know being a ventriloquist is hard enough.  Anyway I pushed through it with God's help.  Uncle Rufus started off the show and then it was on to Woody for the close.  It ended up being a really nice event although the people were waiting to eat, and I had to go on before the food was served, because the man with the grill broke down on the highway. So I had a hundred something hungry, hot souls sitting in front of me outside under a tent waiting for me to make them laugh.  To God be the glory....lol.

     Immediately after the show Sherry and I packed our truck and headed back home for another six hour drive.  We ended up stopping in Lagrange, GA for some brick oven baked pizza and calamari.  It was good.  We then proceeded to make the 80 mile trip home, which seemed longer than the whole six hour trip.  Luckily for me Sherry drove the last leg.  I was knocked out sleep.  I kept waking up thinking our we there yet?  Nope not yet.

     We made it home and I hopped right in the bed.  I did not pass Go or collect $200. I woke up Sunday morning and turned on the television to watch Word of Faith with Bishop Dale C. So back to the story.  I got up this morning and made it to church at Tabernacle of Praise International in McDonough, GA. My wife was exhausted so I went to stand in the gap for my family.  That's what us men are suppose to do.  We are the spiritual leaders of our families you know.  You do know that right?  Okay cool.  So I made it to church and the children led the service this week under the tutelage of Minister Sipho Mhlanga.  This guy is a firecracker for God.  I don't know if anyone has more energy than him.  Well, maybe Pastor T.J. McBride, but Sipho is our youth pastor and he is great!  This morning he had a few of our teenagers speak about a recent mission trip that they took to Jamaica.  The kids spoke so eloquently and made me very proud.  They talked about how they saw the move of God on some of the poor people that they encountered.  They mentioned how even though the people did not have money or the things that we have in America they still had the joy of Christ in them.  It was moving to hear them speak.  Afterwards Pastor T. J. McBride introduced Dr. Patricia Bailey a missionary who has traveled all over the world bringing the gospel to people, and helping them with their needs.  She told the church about a horrible atrocity which is taking place in the Congo of Africa and other African nations regarding the raping of young females.  Would you believe that there are African soldiers who are raping young African girls all the way down the age of five?  Yes.  They are doing this in accordance to some pagan belief that they are made stronger and gain more power by raping women and young girls. How absurd is that?  There was one story of how someone raped an eleven month old baby girl.  You've got to be kidding me!  So her message really stirred us up today and she charged TOP (Tabernacle of Praise International) and all African American churches to get more involved with international missions work.  Our pastor agreed and we are committed to doing so.  That's why I love TOP because we are actually doing work in the community and the world.  We can see where our money goes.  We ended up taking up an offering for Dr. Patrica Bailey's ministry as she was leaving today to head straight for the Congo of Africa.  She has been involved in numerous missions and has worked with Pastor Bill Winston, and Dr. Fred Price of Crenshaw Christian Center in Los Angeles.  For more information or to make a donation to her ministry go to www.patriciabaileyministries.com.  

She talked about how much we spend here in America to maintain our habits, creature comforts, and luxuries.  We put so much emphasis on having the newest I-Phone, Samsung Galaxy, Ipad,or the new Jordans, or having the finest car, or home, but on a whole we do not support people in need as much as we can.  In fact, we don't even know what is going on in these foreign countries unless the news media tells us.  Unfortunately they are not telling us every thing.  Therefore, we have to do our own research, and find out where we can help others.  We have so much here in America.  Sometimes too much.  It seems the more we get, the more we want.  We are never satisfied. We have so many things and then we have to work so hard to keep it all.  In the end it's like the things end up having us.  I'm making a concerted effort to cut back, downsize, save, and have more money to contribute to world missions and even domestic missions.  Our goal is to take the gospel to the uttermost parts of the world.  If we don't do it who will?

It's Three O Clock in the Morning and All is Well

Good Morning Everyone:

I hope this blog finds you in good spirits.  What an action packed week I had here in Georgia and on the road.  We finished our Worship cohort at Ohio Christian University.  I learned quite a bit about worship during the past six weeks.  Class work was pretty intense, but I made it through.  We have a small group of committed students in our class.  We are meshing together as one collective body in our Masters program.  Being in a Christian school with a curriculum based on Christian ethics and practices makes the whole process more meaningful and applicable.

I gave my first sermon in front of the class during the oral part of our final project.  I'm kind of proud of the way it was administered to me by the Holy Spirit, and how I was able to deliver it.  Here is my sermon:


Today’s Sermon Topic: Who Is Your Insurance Provider and What is your Coverage? Most responsible people today have some type of insurance.  Some have life insurance, others have car insurance, some have homeowner’s insurance and apartment insurance, and some even have health insurance if you’re fortunate.

 There is nothing worse than having a car accident and then finding out that you don’t have coverage, or the person that hit you doesn't have coverage.

There is nothing worse than going to the hospital for an emergency room visit knowing that you don’t have health insurance and you don’t have proper coverage.

Well you know a lot people tell you that they are going to be there for you when you need them.  People are often like insurance companies.  They are always telling you what they are going to do for you:  some say “Like a good neighbor State Farm is there”,  Others say “Nationwide is on your side,” some even say "you're in good hands with Allstate."  Others say don’t worry “get a piece of the rock like Prudential.” But there are times in life when no one is there for you.  You look around and there is no one to be by your side.  You find yourself in a wilderness experience.  Maybe you lost a  loved one, or maybe sickness has crept into your body, or perhaps your child is on the wild side or you lost your job. We've all been there where it seemed like we were all alone. 

Oh Family, but I’m happy to tell you on this Easter Sunday morning that there is someone who is there for you. Oh yeah he sits high and looks low.  He counts every strand of hair that is on your head.  His answers are yes and amen, he calls you friend.  The Bible tells us in (Proverbs 18:24 KJV) “A man that has friends must first show himself friendly, and there’s a friend that sticks closer than a brother.”

You may go into the hospital and not have health insurance, but you can tell them that you have “blessed assurance.”

When they ask you what type of coverage you have tell them that you are covered by the blood of Jesus.  For Hebrews 9:11-15 tells us that not just any old coverage will do.  You may have Geico, or you may have  Kaiser Permananente, or you may have Blue Cross, but I come here today to tell you that Kaiser Permananente may not be permanent enough, and that Blue Cross may not do. Oh you have the cross, but what you need is Power of the Cross from the Blood of Jesus. It’s the only coverage that is going to work for you. Because when you have Jesus as your insurance provider no matter what the premium is, it’s already been paid for on calvary!   His protection is indefinite.  It will last a life time! You're not just getting insurance for a short term or what they call a term life policy.  When Jesus is your insurance agent you're getting a whole life policy that will last you your whole life...Amen.  For John 3:16 tells us that God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life!.  It’s time for you to get the coverage that you need.  You can’t do anything to earn it. And you can’t pay for it, and you can't work for it.  It’s already been paid  for through the Blood of Jesus Christ.  Is there anyone today who is looking for a new insurance provider?  Is there anyone who needs new coverage today?  An everlasting coverage?  If so, would you kindly make your way down to this altar right now!  I see you coming Brother, I see you coming sister.  Oh I bet if we clap for them they'll keep coming!  Give the Lord a hand clap of praise!

After I finished my sermon I told the congregation that we would be hearing a selection from our worship leader minister Woody.  And Woody came out and sang "Nobody Greater."  It was awesome! I had been meaning to bring Woody to class and I didn't know how I was going to fit him in.  Since this was our last day with our Professor Dr. Harris, I thought it appropriate to let him make his debut.   I felt accomplished.  Praise God.  It's amazing what he can do with us if we allow him to have his way.

On Saturday I flew to Norfolk, Virginia to minister in comedy to a single's outing for Faith Tabernacle Center Church of St. Paul, N.C. under the leadership of Pastor Earl Goings.  We had a great time in the Lord.  I ended up getting two hours of sleep, because I had a to get up and catch a Delta flight out of Newport News so that I could make it back to Atlanta in time to get to a 10 AM service in Macon, GA at True Gospel Christian Church with Pastor Ral Waltower. It was he and his wife's second anniversary there.  The devil tried to hold me back, but couldn't.  My plane was delayed an hour, and then we sat in the plane for another hour waiting to take off.  It was the longest flight ever back to Atlanta.  I keep falling asleep and waking up and we were still above the clouds....LOL.

Finally we landed, and I hurried to baggage claim and picked up my belongings and caught the shuttle to the parking lot to get my car. As I proceeded down I-75 south I noticed an accident at the I- 675 split.  Figures.  Here we go again.  Get thee behind me Satan.  I quickly veered off on exit 228, and took the back roads down to exit 218 where I met my wife Sherry at the Racetrack gas station.  I needed to re-up on some DVDs.  I met my wife for a quick hug and a kiss, made the transaction,bought a honey bun, and jumped back on the highway.  I made it to the church and we helped Pastor Waltower and his entire congregation of members and friends to have a great celebration.  Pastor Waltower came out of Higher Living Christian Church where we all served under Pastor Andre Landers for a number of years.  Pastor Waltower is a great man of God and is doing awesome things for the kingdom.  You will be hearing a lot about him I guarantee it.  You know how it is when you meet people who are sincere, down to earth, and on fire for the Lord?  Well that's Pastor Waltower and his wife.  His truly teaches God's word and is building up a faithful band of followers.  I love his witness and devotion to God's people.

Well I have to go to sleep.  It's 3:46 AM and I have to get up around 10 AM or so and finish up my final project so that I can submit it.  We start our new cohort Biblical Interpretation tomorrow night at 6 PM with a new instructor.  It's about to be on and popping.

Hello folks.  It's 11:36 PM on Tuesday night and I just finished sending out a few contracts for The Clean Comedy Clinic Inc.  We have a big tour coming up with my man Michael Hodges from Play It by Ear Productions out of Killeen, TX on May 9, 2015 right before Mother's Day.  We are looking forward to this.  Mothers are so very important to us all.  Without mothers where would we be? I love my mother so much although it seems like we are in that period of role reversal, where I'm telling her the things that she should be doing like she use to tell me many years ago.  I believe it's called the "circle of life."  That's where our parents took care of us and now we get to take care of them.  The operative word is "get".  Yes we don't have to take care of them, we get to take care of them.  In fact we don't have to do much of anything in life, we "get" to do things in life.  We've got to focus on that attitude.  I'm speaking to myself people.  I think they call it changing your trajectory.

Well I'm going to call it quits for the night.  We had a long day starting with the visiting nurse coming to the house at 8 AM to see my Mother.  I also got a call from my partner Sims, who works with me on Youth Vision Builders Inc. www.youthvisionbuilders.com, our youth mentor program in McDonough, GA.  We mentor the kids from the McDonough Housing Authority and surrounding areas.  W'eve been doing it for almost four years now. We meet every Tuesday at 4 PM.  February will be our anniversary month.  I believe that we've made a difference in that community.  If you get a chance go to our website or check out Youth Vision Builders on Facebook to see what we do.  We are just regular people helping regular people.  I think the biggest thing that we've done is stayed consistent.  Sometimes we don't have a great speaker at our meeting or have any special events taking place, but we just show up for some pizza and good talk with the kids.  We've grown to win their trust over the years.  I've seen a lot of them grow up right in front of my eyes.  We try to instill values, manners, and goal setting.  All our children need is a chance and for someone to take a little time with them.  I know it's tough for many of us because we are on the treadmill of life, but if you ever just get a few minutes take some time and talk to our youth.  Don't just talk to your children.  Speak to someone else's children.  I always figure that if I pour something good into these kids, that the universe will cause someone to pour good into mine as well.  Each one teach one.  It takes a village.  You know what I mean.

It's Sunday Post Time

Hello Folks:

It's Sunday, January 11, 2015.  I call it post time, because this is the day that most students who are online post their work to their professors.  And yes I have some work to post as well.  I'm almost finished with my seven page paper on Forgiveness.  It is our final project for Pastoral Caregiver class. We are now quickly moving into Worship as our next class or cohort as they say at Ohio Christian University.  I should be working on my reference page, but I glanced at my blog and couldn't resist.  I had a great day thus far.  I woke up at 8 AM and watched Bishop Dale C. Bronner from Word of Faith on television.  He gave a great message as usual.  Then I fell back to sleep and woke up at 9:48 AM to my son Willie's phone call.  He called me to ask me if I was going to church.  I was feeling so relaxed that I wanted to lay back down in bed, but I knew if I did I would miss service at Tabernacle of Praise International.  So I got up and prepared to attend service.

My wife told me that she would not be going because she waited too late to get ready, and began to make breakfast for my mother.  I then called my son back and told him that I would swing by and pick him up for service.  Church service was off the chain as usual.  It started out with a high sense of praise and worship led by the choir.  Everyone was on one accord.  The music was great and singing seemed to bring down the spirit of the Lord.  I was real excited to see everyone, but mainly to have my son Willie III by my side.  There is nothing better than for a parent to have their older children by their side in worship.  That is evidence that the enemy's plan to prevent your offspring from being in the house of the Lord did not work. And that gives one the strength to clap and shout even louder.  Yes there is a spiritual warfare that we are dealing with in these last days.  We have to fight the spirit through the spirit, and that is through prayer and fasting.  When the disciples tried to remove the demon from the young man in the Bible and could not, they asked Jesus why they were not able to do so.  And Jesus said in Matthew 17 19:21 "howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

Therefore, prayer and fasting is the tool that we must use when fighting spiritual warfare.  Prayer and Fasting not just prayer.  Sometimes we've got to push ourselves to do those things that are uncomfortable to get to the place where God would have us to be.  Since this is the beginning of the year many people start with a fast to set the course of the year in a positive direction.  Our church is on the Daniel Fast right now.  I pray for all of you who may be on some type of fast in order to build up your spiritual strength and relationship with God.

Be encouraged.  Be steadfast and unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord 1 Corinthians 15:58.  Until next time I say God bless you and your family.

Burning the Midnight Oil

     I have so much respect for people who attend college or graduate school while working full-time jobs and taking care of their families.  It's amazing what some people go through in this life to reinvent themselves or just to make it to another level.  It's 1:19 AM and I'm just finishing the first three pages of a six to seven page paper for my Pastoral Caregiver class at Ohio Christian University.  So far so good.  I'm making steady progress as time passes each day.  In the midst of doing my school work I am running a booking agency for clean and Christian Comedians, doing shows as they come, being a husband, and taking care of my wife and elderly mother.  I give all of the glory to God.  I could not do any of this without God.  I'm already looking back on some of my hurdles saying how in the world did I overcome that?  But God as Isaac Caree says in his song.  My mom went into the hospital just before Thanksgiving due to a UTI.  It effected her memory, balance, and stability.  She was really in a bad way there for minute.  When she left the hospital she came home and my wife and I had to do almost everything for her.  For a moment it was like having  an adult child.  But for the grace of God.  Thank you Jesus!  We were able to get her into the Westbury Health and Rehab Center in Conyers, GA.  She stayed there for three weeks and came home on Christmas Eve.

What a Christmas present!  My mother coming home was better than any gift that someone could have given me.  My wife prepared Christmas dinner for our combined family.  All of our children were present and we had a great time.  Christmas was much better than Thanksgiving.  The only turkey I had at Thanksgiving was what I used to make my spaghetti.  I ended up going to Golden Corral a week later to eat turkey, dressing, and cranberry sauce.

     Well I better turn in because we are on the Daniel Fast at Tabernacle of Praise, and we are suppose to be on the 6AM prayer call.  This will be the third day coming up.  Last night I did not sleep at all.  My stomach must have been talking to me.  Hunger and thinking kept me up all night long.  Some say that when you can't sleep that you should get up and pray.  Maybe that is a sign that God wants to talk to you.
